The mashrabiya, grown rather than carved.
Mushroomiya translates the screened light of the mashrabiya into a half-sphere lattice grown from mycelium on palm-derived fibre. Its open cells hold light and shadow in equal measure, so the lamp works as much on the room as on the table beneath it.
The form was developed during the BASE39 Creative Accelerator in 2026, where it was a winning finalist. Commissioned domes are grown as a single shell in a mould, stabilised, and fitted with their light source in Dubai.
The dome measures 1200 mm across. Light source and suspension are confirmed for each commission, so the lamp can be specified for a residence, a lobby or a restaurant.
